An Azure Virtual Desktop project became the starting point for a governed cloud platform
Most virtual desktop projects begin with one question. How do people get secure access to their desktops and applications? An Australian specialist hospital asked a bigger one.
It wanted that access. It also wanted the platform behind it to be ready for whatever came next in the cloud. So the hospital and cubesys made a deliberate choice: put the Azure foundations in place before building the first desktop.
A desktop project with a bigger ambition
The hospital runs a specialist environment with established identity, security and operational practices. Any new platform had to fit those practices, not work around them. The new environment needed to:
- Operate securely within the hospital's own Azure environment.
- Integrate with existing identity and directory services.
- Support specialist application access, including validation and vendor access.
- Establish governance and operational controls that could scale over time.
- Provide a foundation for future Azure initiatives.
- Azure hierarchy and subscription design.
- Role-based access for administration and support teams.
- Naming and tagging standards for day-to-day management.
- Governance, policy, monitoring and operational visibility.
- Secure access to desktops and applications.
- Integration with existing identity services.
- Consistent user profile management.
- Centralised administration and operational oversight.
This was never just a virtual desktop deployment. It was a chance to build the base for long-term cloud growth.
Foundations before the first desktop
The quick path would have been to stand up Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) in a self-contained environment and move on. cubesys and the hospital's team chose not to. A standalone deployment solves today's access problem but leaves the next cloud initiative to start from scratch.
Instead, cubesys designed the Azure platform first, working alongside the hospital's technology team. The design covered:
cubesys aligned each decision with Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework principles. The result was a platform that AVD could sit inside, rather than one more isolated workload.
Desktops and applications, delivered from the cloud
With the foundations set, the focus moved to the experience. AVD is often seen as a work-from-home tool. Here it became a way to deliver desktops and applications within the hospital's own operating environment.
cubesys brought together Windows 11 multi-session host pools, FSLogix profile management on premium Azure Files storage, and Nerdio Manager for Enterprise. Nerdio handles administration, image lifecycle and autoscaling. That lets the hospital run the platform as a managed service rather than a collection of servers.
One governed platform now supports specialist, operational, validation and vendor access scenarios.

Working it through together
Technology alone was never going to decide the outcome. The harder questions sat in authentication, connectivity and security, where a new platform meets an existing environment.
cubesys worked through those questions with the hospital's technology team. The engagement drew on Azure architecture and governance, AVD design, identity integration, hybrid connectivity and operational readiness. Throughout, the conversation stayed on how the platform would be managed, secured and supported once it was live.
Advisory, architecture and delivery, from planning through to a production-ready platform.
What changed for the hospital
The hospital now runs a production Azure Virtual Desktop platform within its own Azure tenant. It provides:
Just as important is what it makes possible. Because cubesys built the platform inside a governed Azure environment, future cloud initiatives can build on the same foundations instead of starting again.
What other organisations can take from this
Desktop modernisation often starts with a narrow goal, such as remote access or replacing ageing infrastructure. This hospital's experience shows the value of looking one step further.
Get the foundations right first, and a single project can become the base for what follows.
