Uniting Vic.Tas Modernises IT with AVD to Better Serve Communities

Aiming for a Smarter, Seamless Desktop Experience

Uniting Vic.Tas set out to modernise their desktop environment, seeking a partner who could work closely with their IT team to deliver an Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) solution. The goal was clear: create a secure, efficient workspace using Windows 11 multi-session virtual machines that could support both full desktop and Remote App experiences, while continuing to leverage existing App-V packages.

cubesys collaborated with their team to achieve this vision, integrating MSIX App Attach to ensure applications were delivered smoothly within the new cloud environment.

Crafting the Solution

The cubesys team designed a solution that blended modern cloud capabilities with the practical needs of Uniting Vic.Tas:

  • Entra ID–joined session hosts for streamlined identity management
  • Hybrid-joined host pool to maintain compatibility with legacy applications
  • Single Sign-On and Multi-Factor Authentication for secure and simple access
  • Conditional Access policies to strengthen governance
  • Nerdio Manager for Enterprise to automate and manage AVD efficiently
  • Secure connectivity to on-premises resources
  • All components deployed within a dedicated Azure subscription

This setup ensured the organisation could take full advantage of AVD while keeping operations secure, automated, and easy to manage.

"The new environment has re-imagined the way we work. Our IT team spends less time on maintenance and more time supporting the frontline, while staff can access the applications they need quickly and securely from anywhere."

— Russell Pead, Head of IT, Uniting Vic.Tas

Delivering Tangible Benefits

By partnering with cubesys, Uniting Vic.Tas unlocked several practical advantages:

  • Cost Efficiency: The move to Windows 11 multi-session VMs and Remote Apps reduced infrastructure overhead and optimised licensing through better resource utilisation.
  • Simplified User Experience: Entra ID–joined session hosts, single sign-on, and MSIX App Attach integration made accessing applications effortless for staff.
  • Accelerated Cloud Adoption: The secure, scalable AVD platform gave the organisation a solid foundation for digital transformation and modern IT services.
  • Enhanced Security & Governance: Multi-factor authentication, Conditional Access policies, and a dedicated Azure subscription strengthened both security posture and governance capabilities.

Automation at the Core

A standout feature of this deployment was the fully stateless Azure Virtual Desktop environment. By eliminating gold images and manual patching, cubesys prioritised automation, repeatability, and simplicity.

Led by cubesys Senior Cloud Consultant George Zajakovski, the team implemented Nerdio Manager for Enterprise to automate the heavy lifting. Each month, as part of the cubesys AVD Managed Service, a fresh, fully patched Windows 11 image from the Azure Marketplace is automatically deployed—ensuring session hosts are always secure and up to date, with zero manual effort from the Uniting Vic.Tas IT team.

Scripted Actions within Nerdio automated host customisation—configuring regional settings, mapping drives, and copying user shortcuts—making the environment consistent and easy to manage.

For applications, Nerdio’s Unified Application Manager (UAM) allowed rapid deployment of essential apps such as Notepad++, Visual Studio, and .NET. Meanwhile, MSIX App Attach dynamically delivered corporate App-V applications, keeping the base image lean while ensuring every user had what they needed.

Working Together to Achieve More

Uniting Vic.Tas brought a highly capable IT team to the project. Their technical expertise and clear vision made collaboration straightforward and productive. This allowed cubesys to focus on delivering a smooth, automated AVD platform, confident that the organisation could support and extend the environment long after deployment.

A Platform for Growth and Impact

This project demonstrates how a modern, automated AVD deployment can streamline operations, reduce overhead, and accelerate cloud adoption. Beyond technology, it empowered Uniting Vic.Tas to deliver services more efficiently, providing staff with reliable, secure access to the tools they need—and ultimately supporting the organisation’s broader mission.
